Bangkok CBD: What Does It Mean And Where Is It Located?

Updated: May 3, 2023

When we talk about the CBD (Central Business District) of a city we mainly allude to the focal point of a city’s commerce and retail business center. It usually points out to the earliest developing areas of a capital and is often located near the best available transportation networks such as a river or other easily accessible passage points.

In Bangkok the earliest signs of the CBD originated around the well-known Chao Praya River which runs through the heart of the capital. The 372km long river has always been an important location for the city’s commerce. As a result many merchants settled around the banks of the Chao Praya River bringing to life the current CBD as we know it today.

Since the Chao Praya River and Charoenkrung road are one of those old network routes, the initial Bangkok CBD is considered to be the Yawarat area better known as Chinatown.

The Central and Commercial Business district in a city constitutes of a central core or inner CBD and can widen further into an outer CBD through the establishment of various factors. As was and still is the case with the continuous modernization of Bangkok, the core CBD expanded by the urging need for and appearance of new retail, businesses and commercial infrastructures.

This generated the development of Bangkok’s prime CBD areas currently known as Silom and Sathorn as well as the wonderful nature of Lumphini Park around Wireless Road with its eye soothing views of lush green trees offering a comforting shade in the heart of the city.

Sathorn is considered to be the financial hub of Bangkok consisting of various financial investment, business and service foundations, alongside various embassies and many other aiding facilities, such as business office buildings, hotels and high quality luxurious condominium complexes.

One of the extensions of the original CBD is considered to be early Sukhumvit area. It provides numerous commercial buildings and various nightlife activities. Many foreigners reside in this famous part of Bangkok city which offers a wealth of luxury hotels and high end residential formats. One the well-known streets providing these attractions in Sukhumvit is soi Nana.

The area further enlarges up to Asoke which is part of the Ratchadaphisek inner ring road. It has a vibrant business and commercial life and is considered as a transportation center point by reason of the interchange of MRT Sukhumvit and BTS Asoke.

After that we have Phrom Phong with its first class luxury retail shopping complexes such as The Emporium and the EmQuartier, just to name a few. It is also home to Benjasiri Park a wonderful green oasis in the heart of Bangkok.

When we go deeper down the Sukhumvit Avenue we have Ekkamai and Sukhumvit 55 better known as Tong Lor. It is an area inhabiting many businesses and overseas companies having contributed to the rise of a variety of high end residential complexes, many first class western and Japanese style restaurants as well as local delicacies and high end trendy clubs and bars.

One of the important factors to notice in Bangkok is the continuous expansion of the underground MRT network as well as the BTS Sky Train, both of which have opened up the possibilities of new emerging CBD’s.

Since the ongoing developments around the old CBD have massively expanded it has become harder to find new prime locations. The land prices have significantly increased which contributed to the fact that new development projects have become less financially attractive.

For this reason many developing companies were and still are forced to broaden their horizons and look out for other potential areas in the city to build their new projects. Once again these new developments are led by the continuous expansion of the BTS Sky Train and the underground MRT.

Bangkok’s residents prefer to live near the stations of either one of these mass transit options to avoid the city’s heavy traffic and commute to work and elsewhere in a faster and more feasible way.

Therefore many developers are building their new projects near one of the BTS or MRT entrances and in this way these rising present day residential facilities have aided to the emergence of different companies and retail businesses allowing the creation of possible future extensions of the original core and outer CBD.

Examples of these new emerging high potential areas are Rama 9, Ratchadaphisek, Punnawithi, Rama 4 and Bangna, just to name a few.
